Minecraft Java Edition Will Soon Require An Microsoft Account

Following Mojang's acquisition by Microsoft, Minecraft Java Edition has been running as is. Bedrock Edition was created to integrate with Microsoft's account system, but Java has been operating on its own Mojang account island up to the present. Java Edition will soon require you to sign up for an Microsoft account in order to play. However, you'll still receive the free cape.

In the first quarter of 2021, you will be required to move your Java or Mojang account over to the Microsoft account system. Mojang says this is primarily to introduce two-factor authentication in order to provide increased security, though it'll also bring better parental controls including chat and invitation block and account integration between Minecraft and Minecraft Dungeons.

Mojang has no plans to alter Minecraft mods or PvP. Java and Bedrock will remain entirely distinct games. While you can still use your Java username, you'll require changing your username if you sign up with an account on a Microsoft account. You can merge your Minecraft sign-ins if you already have an existing Microsoft account.

Mojang offers the cape, which was once the most sought-after Java Edition item: to make the transition easier. You'll get a cape for free for taking part in the migrationprocess, and while it won't feature the exclusive designs of the Minecon mantles It will offer everyone the chance to feel regal for a while.

Although there is no reason to expect anything to change, players have concerns. For  just another blog or something , the more restrictive terms of service offered by Microsoft could result in bans and could result in players being denied access to Minecraft.

More details are available in the FAQ and the official announcement. We'll find out how it plays out in the first quarter of 2021.
